ADHD/ADD Coaching is an emerging field that seeks to help individuals with attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder accomplish their life goals. The concepts of ADHD/ADD Coaching are outlined in the groundbreaking 1994 book, Driven to Distraction, written by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D. and John J. Ratey, M.D.
"The person with ADD will greatly benefit from having a 'coach,' someone standing on the sidelines with a whistle around his neck calling out encouragement, instructions, and reminders, and in general helping to keep things going on task," Hallowell and Ratey write. "People with ADD thrive with this sort of structured encouragement, and they feel lost without."
Hallowell and Rately write that group therapy can provide similar support and encouragement that keeps people focused and leave them feeling less lost. They also note that traditional psychotherapy can be beneficial for those with ADHD or ADD who are also struggling with depression, problems with self-esteem and other similar issues that can accompany the illness.
People with attention deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are often gifted, talented and creative, and are often limited only by their inattention and/or hyperacitivity. ADHD/ADD Coaching seeks to lean into their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses to increase the likelihood of their success at work, school and/or in life.
In ADHD/ADD Coaching, the coach takes a more active role than a traditional psychotherapist. The coach does not tell the client or their loved ones what to do, but rather asks what they want to do, reminds them, regularly and repeatedly, of what they have told the coach, create a game plan and them helps remind the client of their goals and objectives and encourage them along the way, always with an eye on keeping them on track. Even when those with ADHD or ADD get on track, they can often get sidetracked, and having an outside person who understands what they are going through can keep them engaged. In essence, coaching brings the client back, time and again, to where they want to be but have trouble staying on their own. This approach to ADHD/ADD coaching was developed by myself and psychologists in our practice who specialize in these areas.
Our ADD/ADHD coaching programs are designed for adolescents and adults. We explore and deploy tailored-made techniques that focus on organization, time management, attention span, creativity, work-life/school-life balance, task management, memory and a host of other areas.
Our approach to ADHD/ADD Coaching begins with confirmation of the diagnosis, which not only allows us to be sure that we are dealing with ADHD/ADD, but to tease out the individual presentation of symptoms and come up with an additional game plan. The next step is evaluating the person in their natural environment, whether at home or at school. Then, we come up with a written game plan that discusses the client's specific symptoms, coping skills that can be deployed and recommendations for a program of coaching. The process is driven by a clear and simple process:
- Initial Evaluation - Broken into two, one-and-half hour sessions.
- Home Evaluation, Workplace Evaluation and/or School Evaluation.
- Written Game Plan
- Coaching
